The Centre would soon resume issuing sugar export permits under the Open General Licence, a government official said today. |
"We have decided to soon start issuing the export permits," the official told NewsWire18. Late last week, the government had stopped issuing release orders for sugar exports under the Open General Licence, as the quantitative limit for the scheme had been exhausted. |
In January, after the ban on sugar exports was completely lifted, government had capped exports of the commodity under the Open General Licence scheme by imposing quantitative limits. |
Though the quantity was not detailed in the notification, officials said the limit was 750,000 tonne. Officials also said government is also planning to raise the quantitative ceiling on sugar exports under the Open General Licence scheme to 1.5 million tonne from 750,000 tonne. |
A blanket ban on sugar exports was imposed in June to augment domestic supplies, keep a check on prices, and tame inflationary pressure. |
