Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has come out with new guidelines for transportation of laboratory animals and livestock which require that animals should be transported in conditions that ensure their reaching in fit conditions.
The new standard IS-14903:2001 will replace existing IS390:1977 requiring transportation of animals in conditions ensuring their suitability for research workers, a BIS release said.
The animals covered under the new standards include mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, cotton rats, hamsters, snakes and frogs. The new standard lays down requirements for ventilation, floor space density, food and water.

BIS has also formulated is 14904-2001 replacing existing 4157 for specifying code practice for transportation of livestock, the release said.
This standard prescribes the conditions for transport of livestock like cattle, sheep, goat and equines by rail, road, air and sea.
BIS laid down ISI 4892 standards for threadfin, fresh and frozen, prescribing the requirments and the method of sampling and testing.
Threadfin, commonly known as dara, is an important fish found in Maharashtra and Gujarat coast and usually eaten fresh and frozen.
