Hindustan Copper Limited has issued the official notice for closure and permanent termination of mining activities at its mines at Surda in the Ghatsila sub-division of the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

P Swaroop, general manager of the Indian copper complex (ICC) here, said the closure notice was issued by the Union labour ministry on June 7 and was made public on June 10 at the Surda mines notice board. The closure was implemented with immediate effect.

HCL has offered voluntary retirement to the 1211 employees of Surda mines, with those not opting for the scheme being terminated.

HCL has been incurring losses for over a decade now owing to depleting copper deposits in the mines as well as shortage of working capital for operating the mines.
