The area under mustard, the main winter oilseed crop sown in Haryana, has registered an increase owing to favourable conditions.

According to Haryana agriculture department officials, the total area under mustard crop this year had been 532,000 hectares as compared to 515,000 hectares previous year, an increase of 2.9 per cent.

Haryana agriculture department additional director B S Duggal said the favourable conditions for the oilseed crop has resulted in area under mustard increasing. The rains in September helped the soil to preserve moisture that in turn helped increase acreage of the crop.

With area under mustard cultivation going up, the department is anticipating increase in production as well.

As compared to 895,000 tonnes production last year, this year the agriculture department was eyeing production at 963,000 tonnes in 2009-10, up 7.5 per cent from the previous year, on account of increased acreage.
