BUSINESS STANDARD

* Finance Minister announced a roll back of some of the proposals of the recently announced budget. For income tax payers in the income bracket between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, rebate under section 88 has been increased to 15 per cent. The tax-free investment limit has also been increased from Rs 80,000 to Rs 1,00,000.

Other important amendments are removal of service tax on insurance premium and dividends from mutual funds and companies will attract TDS only if they exceed Rs 1,000.

* Bharti has taken the price war to international long distance (ILD) services, by announcing a reduction of up to 40 per cent in ILD tariffs.

 

A call to the US or Europe during peak hours will cost only Rs 24 per minute on Bharti
