India's castor seed production likely to rise by 22% this year

The country's castorseeds production is expected to jump by 22 per cent to 11.90 lakh tonnes in the 2010-11 crop year, as compared to the year-ago, according to edible oil industry body SEA. 

Castorseeds production stood at 9.78 lakh tonnes in the same period last year, the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) said in a statement.  

The maximum increase in production has been estimated in Andhra Pradesh, followed by Rajasthan and Gujarat, according to the Neilson India survey conducted on behalf of SEA.

Castorseeds production in Andhra Pradesh is estimated to go up by 62 per cent to 1.38 lakh tonnes in the 2010-11 crop year (June-May) as against 85,000 tonnes last year, it said.  

 

Similarly, production in Rajasthan is likely to increase by 27 per cent to 1.61 lakh tonnes from 1.26 lakh tonnes, while the output in Gujarat is estimated to rise by 17 per cent to 8.60 lakh tonnes in the review period, it added.

SEA said castor crop has been planted in 8.59 lakh hectare, up 14 per cent from last year. The crop yields are expected to rise by 7 per cent at 1,385 kg per hectare, against 1,297 kg per hectare, it added.

The castorseed products have widespread application in paint, lubricant, pharmaceutical and textiles industries.
