As far as jewellery tastes go, the preferences of younger Indian and European women appear to be converging but shoppers in the US have divergent choices.

Young women in US prefer classic designs of gold and diamond jewellery, while their counterparts in India and Europe prefer lightweight designs in gold and diamond jewellery.

Ladies in India and Europe prefer buying chains, bangles and bracelets but American ladies spend more on earrings, rings and pendants.

Vijay Jain, CEO of Inter Gold Gems (IGG), pointed out that sale of light jewellery in India outsold heavy gold jewellery in the ratio 3:1. IGG was part of the $ 2 billion Belgium-based Rosyblue Group, one of the biggest players in the light weight diamond jewellery segment.

In recent years, younger buyers and working women have been showing strong preference for lightweight jewellery.
