With the summer season just begining, mangoes have started arriving in Indore. Indore is the highest consumer of mangoes in Madhya Pradesh. Around 200 tonne mangoes arrive in the city markets daily from April to July.

During this period, about 20 trucks reach the city daily from six states such as UP, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The capacity of each truck is around 10 tonne. The city witnesses a total Rs 1.60 crore business by sale of mangoes every year. The mangoes are generally priced at Rs 20 a kg.

The varieties from western India are more popular, with Hapus and Alfonso selling at Rs 60 a kg.

While the southern varieties such as Neelam and Totapari average are sold at Rs 20 a kg, the north Indian varieties Chausa, Langda and Dussehri sell at Rs 40-50 per kg.

"There are many families in the city who order a box of 20 kg of mangoes twice a week," said a mango trader.
