India’s sugar output is estimated to rise marginally by 1.25%on favourable climatic conditions during sugarcane crop maturing period.
Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the apex trade body, forecast India’s total output this sugar year (November 2012 - October 2013) to stand at 24.3 million tonnes from its earlier estimate of 24 million tonnes. The output, however, is lower than that last year’s actual production of 26 million tonnes which ISMA had estimated in the beginning of the previous season.

The satellite images of sugarcane acreage as on 7th January, 2013 for the country as a whole has been considered, which gives an idea of sugarcane harvested upto January 7 and the cane available in the fields.

While making estimates, ISMA has also taken care of sugarcane, which would go into local sweeteners, seed purposes for 2013-14 plantation, sugarcane for chew/feed purpose, impact of drought on sugarcane yield and recovery in southern and western zones etc, an ISMA statement said.
