Jeera prices surged by Rs 165 to Rs 13,785 per quintal in futures trading today as speculators enlarged positions due to a pick-up in demand in the spot market against restricted arrivals.

Some overseas enquiries also influenced the trading sentiment.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, jeera for September delivery spurted by Rs 165, or 1.21 per cent, to Rs 13,785 per quintal with an open interest of 5,850 lots.

Similarly, the spice for delivery in October moved up by Rs 78, or 0.57 per cent, to Rs 13,841 per quintal in 14,270 lots.

Analysts said apart from the tight stocks position following less arrivals from producing regions, a pick-up in demand mainly pushed up jeera prices in futures trade here.
