Jeera prices rose by 0.33% to Rs 16,030 per quintal in futures trade today as speculators built-up positions amid a deficient monsoon, which may hit sowing operations and crop output.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, jeera for delivery in September surged by Rs 52.50, or 0.33%, to Rs 16,030 per quintal, with an open interest of 20,043 lots.

August jeera was up by Rs 30, or 0.19%, to Rs 15,665 per quintal, with an open interest of 10,019 lots.

Marketmen said besides the pick up in spot market demand, weak rainfall in key growing regions, which could hit sowing operations and crop output, influenced jeera prices at futures trade.

Meanwhile at Unjha, a key market in Gujarat, jeera gained Rs 40 to Rs 16,357 per 100 kg.
