Jeera futures today rose by Rs 267.50 to Rs 12,480 per quintal, as traders built up fresh positions, driven by a rise in spot demand.
However, increased arrivals of the new season crop in the spot market amid expectations of higher output this year, restricted the gains.
At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, May jeera shot up by Rs 267.50 or 2.19%, to Rs 12,480 per quintal, with an open interest of 9,420 lots.
The April delivery gained Rs 255, or 2.14%, to Rs 12,190 per quintal in 15,318 lots.
Analysts said fresh buying by traders on pick-up in spot demand mainly led to the rise in jeera futures prices. But increased arrivals of the new season crop amid hopes of higher output this year, limited the gains.
