The heavyweights were not the ones that pulled up the BSE Sensex to a 28-month high of 3764.44 on Tuesday, a level last seen on March 29, 2001, but lightweights such as Tata Engineering, Bajaj Auto, State Bank of India (SBI), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), Grasim and Tata Steel.

Except for SBI, each of the other stocks has a weightage of less than 3 per cent in the 30-scrip Sensex.

Interestingly, as many as 13 stocks, including Hindustan Lever, Infosys Technologies and Reliance Industries, were being quoted lower than they were 28 months ago.

Sensex lightweights Tata Engineering (weight: 2.40 per cent on July 28), and Bajaj Auto (1.90 per cent) have each appreciated by over 100 per cent since March 29, 2001.
