Rupee hits 5-month low

The Indian rupee on Wednesday suffered its biggest single-day drop in six months, losing 54 paise against the US dollar to end at 74.98 as investors turned cautious in view of massive selloffs in domestic equities and strengthening greenback against key rivals. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 74.63 and witnessed an intra-day high of 74.54 and a low of 74.99 against the US dollar in day trade.

Oil drops for 2nd session on unexpected rise in US inventories

>> Oil prices dropped for a second session Thursday, under pressure from an unexpected rise in U.S. crude stocks that raised concerns over demand after prices rallied to multi-year highs.

>> U.S. crude slid 0.43%, or 33 cents, to $77.10 a barrel after the market climbed on Wednesday to $79.78, the highest since November 2014. Brent crude 2 cents, to $81.06 a barrel.

Asian shares rise on stronger global risk appitite

Asian shares rallied on Thursday, taking heart from a late recovery on Wall Street after U.S. politicans appeared near to a temporary deal to avert a federal debt default and as Russia reassured Europe on gas supplies, calming volatile markets. As oil prices came off on Thursday, there were gains in share benchmarks in Korea (.KS11) up 1.3%, Australia (.AXJO) up 0.64%, and Hong Kong (.HSI) up 2%. Japan's Nikkei (.N225) rose 0.89%, and U.S. stock futures, the S&P 500 e-minis , gained 0.42%.

Wall Street ends higher

Wall Street ended higher on Wednesday as investors grew more optimistic that congressional Democrats and Republicans could reach a deal to avert a government debt default. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% to end at 34,416.99 points, while the S&P 500 gained 0.41% to 4,363.55. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.47% to 14,501.91.
