Rupee settles 4 paise higher at 73.48 against US dollar on Friday
The rupee closed 4 paise higher at 73.48 against the US dollar on Friday, tracking a broad weakness in the American currency overseas. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened flat at 73.49 against the greenback. During the session, the domestic unit witnessed an intra-day high of 73.42 and a low of 73.55.
On a weekly basis, the rupee gained 2 paise against the American currency. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback''s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.12 per cent to 92.82.

Oil down on stronger greenback, rising U.S. rig count
Oil prices fell on Monday, extending losses from Friday after the U.S. dollar jumped to a three-week high and the U.S. rig count rose, although nearly a quarter of U.S. Gulf of Mexico output remained offline in the wake of two hurricanes. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 30 cents, or 0.4%, to $71.67 a barrel at 0059 GMT, after declining by 64 cents on Friday. Brent crude futures fell 27 cents, or 0.4%, to $75.07 a barrel after losing 33 cents on Friday.

Asian markets were lower on Monday; China, Japan markets closed
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index led losses among Asia-Pacific markets in Monday trade. The Hang Seng index dropped 2.18% in Monday morning trade, as shares of China Evergrande Group plummeted more than 10%. The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia fell 1.21%, with shares of major miners declining: Rio Tinto dropped 3.66%, Fortescue Metals Group declined 6.09% while BHP slipped 4.16%. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.23%.
Markets in mainland China, Japan and South Korea are closed on Monday for holidays.

US markets end lower on Friday
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday’s session 166.44 points, or 0.5%, lower at 34,584.88. The S&P 500 shed 0.9% to 4,432.99 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.9% to close at 15,043.97. All three major averages are negative for the month, but still sit less than 3% below their all-time highs.
The S&P 500 saw its biggest trading volume Friday since July 19, more than doubling its 30-day average volume. Friday coincided with the expiration of stock options, index options, stock futures and index futures — a quarterly event known as “quadruple witching.”
