Market Volatility hits Smart Portfolios

The markets witnessed high volatility in the last week ahead of F&O expiry. The benchmark Smart Portfolios S&P CNX 500 index net worth declined marginally by 0.2 per cent to Rs 10.74 lakh from Rs 10.76 lakh in the last five trading days. The benchmark's net worth is now up 7.43 per cent since the inception of Smart Portfolios on September 1, 2009. In the week under review, only three fund managers were active as Phani Sekhar remained on the sidelines.

 

Ajay Parmar,
Head Research Institutional Equities, Emkay

 

Ajay Parmar excuted just one trade, which was on buy side. His portfolio value declined by 1.5 per cent to Rs 12.61 lakh when compared the previous week. Parmar's investments stand at Rs 8.77 lakh while he holds cash worth Rs 3.84 lakh. He added Torrent Pharma to his portfolio for a consideration of Rs 39,154. Lupin and Cadila Healthcare are the major gainers in his portfolio, up between 18 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

 

 

Amar Ambani,

Amar Ambani's portfolio marginally declined by 0.6 per cent to Rs 13.50 lakh last week from Rs 13.58 lakh in the preceding week. He executed four trades, all on the buy side and made net purchases of Rs 1.38 lakh. Ambani has added Tata Chemicals, Valecha Engineering and S Kumar Nationwide to his portfolio. He also bought additional IDFC shares worth Rs 31,174. His total investments now stand at Rs 5.67 lakh, while his cash balance has come down to Rs 7.84 lakh from Rs 9.21 lakh in the previous week.

Phani Sekhar preferred to stay away from the market last week. However, the volitility in the market saw his net worth drop marginally by 0.4 per cent to Rs 10.68 lakh. Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, 3i Infotech and Reliance Infrastructure are the key stocks which weigh on portfolio, with losses in the range of 10-27 per cent each. Among the ones that have fallen by a relatively lower margin include Reliance Industries and Jyoti Structures. His is fully invested, and holds a minimal amount of Rs 1,000 as cash.

 

Vinay Khattar,
Head – Research of WAIS, Edelweiss

 

Vinay Khattar was the most active trader among the fund managers, wherein he executed 16 trades with just one on the buy side. He sold his entire holdings, while added Piramal Healthcare to his kitty. Among the stock holdings in Khattar's portfolio, he sold stocks like Ashok Leyland, Yes Bank, Sesa Goa, Havells India and Godrej Industries from his portfolio at a loss to his investment price. On the other hand, he booked gians in Techno Electric, Escorts and Rallis India. Khattar's investments is now valued at Rs 0.61 lakh, while his cash bank stands high at Rs 10.52 lakh.
