Markets edge higher in noon deals as heavyweights gain

Consumer durables, banks, auto, capital goods among the top gainers

Markets trade around day highs in noon deals on the back of buying emerging in pockets like banks, auto and capital goods. At 1315 hrs, the Sensex was up 155 points at 18,887 and the Nifty was up 52 points at 5,740.

In the broader markets, the mid and smallcap indices gained 0.3% each, both underperforming the Sensex which advanced 0.7%.

Among the sectoral indices, IT, Metal and FMCG were in the negative, down 0.05-0.5%. Meanwhile, Consumer Durables, Banks, Auto, Capital Goods and Realty advanced 1-2%.

The ones leading gains in the capital goods space was L&T up 2.4% along with BHEL and Suzlon Energy up 0.7-1.5%.
 
Among the banks, SBI, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank added 0.5-1.8%.

All the major auto names like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra gained 0.1-2.5%.

The losers among the Sensex-30 were IT names like Wipro, TCS down 1-3%. Metal names like Jindal Steel, Tata Steel and Sterlite down 0.3-1.2% were the major losers.

The market breadth was positive. 1137 stocks advanced while 999 stocks declined on the BSE.
