Markets close in the green

Reliance Industries, HDFC and L&T among the top gainers

The markets gave off some of its early gains in the closing hours as the Sensex closed at 19,497 up 30 points and the Nifty was up 11 points at 5,898.

Markets extended gain in noon deals following gains in heavyweights like Reliance Industries, HDFC and L&T. At 1430 hrs, the Sensex was up 74 points at 19,542 and the Nifty was up 21 points at 5,908.

In the broader markets, the midcap and the smallcap indices were up 0.7% each, outperforming the Sensex which gained 0.4%.

Equity markets in China and Taiwan resumed trading after a week-long holiday. Shanghai Composite index gained 0.33% to 2,427 while Taiwan Weighted rose 0.47% to 7,943 today.

Other Asian markets also gained with Japan's Nikkei rising 2% to 11,408, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.27% to 23,380.17, Singapore's Straits Times added 0.04% to 3,284.64, while South Korea's Kospi was up 0.04% to 1,981 today.

Back home, consumer durables and IT sectors traded lower while real-estate, capital goods, power, metals gained on BSE.

The top gainers among the Sensex stocks were Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC, L&T, Hero MotoCorp, Hindalco, Sterlite, SBI, BHEL and Reliance Industries up 1-2.5%.

Among the losers were Coal India, Jindal Steel, TCS and Bharti Airtel down 0.7-2%. Dr Reddys Lab, Cipla, ONGC and Mahindra & Mahindra down 0.4-0.6% were the other notable losers.

The market breadth was positive. 1546 stocks advanced while 1132 stocks declined on the BSE.
