Markets extend gains

After a merry opening with the Nifty breaking the 5,500 levels after 30 months, the markets are in an upbeat mode. The Sensex has touched an intra-day high of 18,409 and is hovering around the same levels. The Nifty has gained 39 points at 5,518.

The smallcap and midcap indices are up 0.7% and 0.6% each. The movers in the smallcap space are Shree Ram Mills, gaining 10%, Century Enka and Marg, adding 7% each and Confidence Petroleum India, up 6%. In the midcap space, the prominent gainers are Wockhardt,leading with a 14% gain, followed by MVL, up 13% and IBN18 Broadcast adding nearly 6%.

Among the sectoral indices on the BSE, Metal index up 1.4%, continues to shine for the second consecutive day, followed by Consumer Durables up 1.2% and FMCG at 1.1%. After being initially in the red, Teck and IT have rebounded in the green and are up 0.2% each. However, realty continues to languish in the red.

 

The major movers in the metal space are Sesa Goa gaining nearly 3% after a few bad days of trading followed by Jindal Saw and Jindal Steel up 2% each.On the Consumer Durables front, Whirlpool adding 3% continues to lead for the second consecutive day. Videocon Industries and Titan Industries up 1-2% are the other significant movers in this space.However, the daggers in the realty space are Unitech down nearly 2% followed by Orbit Corporation and Anant Raj Industries shedding 1% each.

ACC up 2.5% at Rs 861 leads the Sensex gainers list followed by Jindal Steel and HDFC up 2%. The other prominent gainers are Index heavyweight RIL adding 1.5% at Rs 983 and ICICI Bank up 1.6% at Rs 985.

The losers on the Sensex are Tata Motors and SBI shedding 1% each followed by Relaince Infrastructure and ONGC.

The market breadth remains positive. 1689 stocks have advanced while 832 have declined.
