Markets flat, IT gains

Wipro up 4%, leads gains

Markets continue to trade flat with the Sensex up 26 points at 19,844 and the Nifty up seven points at 6,009.

The broader markets were unmoved with both the midcap and the smallcap indices up 0.1% each.

On the sectoral front, IT index retained gains, up 1%. Realty, Auto, Oil& Gas continue to remain the top index gainers, up 0.4-0.8%.

Metals, Capital Goods, Health Care and Power indices were in the red, down 0.2-0.7%.

In individual stocks, Wipro was trading higher by almost 4% at Rs 436 ahead of its earnings for the third quarter ended December 31, 2012 which will be announced tomorrow.

Suzlon Energy surged over 4% to Rs 19.75 on back of heavy volumes on hopes of signing a corporate debt restructuring package with consortium of lenders.

Sandesh Limited tanked almost 15% to Rs 305 on BSE in early morning deals, after its board fixed a maximum buyback price at Rs 302 per share through tender offer.

Markets started on a flat note with the Sensex up 12 points at 19,829 and the Nifty was flat at 6,005.

The broader markets started in the green with the midcap and the smallcap indices gaining 0.2% each.

In international markets, US stocks ended mixed on Wednesday as investors weighed decent corporate earnings reports against worries about the debt ceiling and global economic growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.17% to 13,511, the S&P 500 was marginally up by 0.02%, to 1,473 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.22%, to 3,117.

In Asia, the markets were trading on a mixed note. Shanghai Composite was down 0.8% along with Hang Seng, KOSPI Composite and Straits Times lost 0.2-0.3%.

Among the sectoral indices, Metal, Consumer Durables, Banks and Power indices began in the negative, down 0.2-0.4%. On the other hand, IT, Auto, Realty and Oil & Gas started in the green with gains between 0.3-0.7%.

The gains in the IT index were on the back of gains in Wipro, Infosys and TCS gaining 0.4-1%. The positive sentiment in the space was kicked up the strong results posted by IT major, HCL Technologies.

The company registered a growth of 68.5% in its net profit year-on-year at Rs 965 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2012, compared to Rs 573 in the same quarter of last fiscal. The stock rallied 5% to Rs 707 in opening deals.

From the auto space, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki added 1-2%.

The other notable gainers among the Sensex- 30 were Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever and SBI up 0.1-0.7%.

On the losing side were Hindalco, Gail India, ONGC, Jindal Steel, HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel and Tata Power down 0.5-1%.

The market breadth was positive on the BSE. 855 stocks advanced while 437 stocks declined.
