Markets have a quiet opening

The markets have opened on a subdued note in line with the quiet trend across the Asian Street and in the absence of any cues from Wall Street, which was closed on Monday on account of  Independence Day. The Sensex is quoting at 17466, higher by 24 points and the Nifty is at 5240, up four points. The midcap index is at 7153, higher by 14 poibnts and the smallcap index is at 9148, up 15 points.

The leading gainers on the Sensex are ONGC (strengthened by 0.7% at Rs 1296), Hindalco (gained 0.7% at Rs 142) and Cipla (added 0.6% at Rs 339). Hindustan Unilever, BHEL and Tata Steel are the other significant gainers. And index heavyweight RIL has added 0.4% at Rs 1073.

 

Among the major Sensex losers, RCom has weakened by 1.6% at Rs 182, Maruti has shed 0.5% at Rs 1388 and DLF has lost 0.3% at Rs 280.

RNRL has lost another 1.9% at Rs 45. The stock had shed more than a quarter of its value in the previous trading session as the merger deal with Reliance Power valued RNRL at a steep discount to its market capitalisation. And Reliance Power is seeing profit-booking after gaining around 3% on Monday. The stock has weakened by 1.1% at Rs 179 on the BSE.

The market breadth is positive. Out of 1284 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 929 advancing stocks as against 320 declines.
