F&O Expiry: Sensex rises 157 pts, Nifty settles at 10,780 led by RIL, TCS

Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index rose 1.4 per cent led by Infosys and TCS. Nifty FMCG index, too, rose, 1.3 per cent led by Marico and ITC.

Nifty outlook by Prabhudas Lilladher for today

The market has been in an extremely volatile move giving wild swings each day. The market, for now, holds the 10530 support, it continues to make the higher bottom for a continuation of the uptrend. The support for the day is seen at 35360/10650 levels while the resistance would be at 35920/10800 levels. Bank Nifty would have the range of 26680-27300. We anticipate some volatility in the market being the expiry of F&O Derivative segment.

Rupee check
 
The rupee trimmed its early sharp gains to settle 8 paise higher at 70.06 against the US currency mainly due to dollar buying by importers in the last hour of trade. The dollar strengthened against major global currencies in a restricted trade which also weighed on the domestic currency.

Oil check
 
US oil prices on Thursday extended their sharp climb from the session before amid rising stock markets, but worries over a glut in crude supply and concerns over a faltering global economy kept a lid on gains.
 
US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 26 cents, or 0.56 per cent, at $46.48 per barrel. They jumped 8.7 per cent to $46.22 per barrel in the previous session. Brent crude oil futures had yet to trade. They rose 8 per cent to $54.47 a barrel the day before.

The Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) were trading at 10,800.50, up 39 points or 0.4 per cent in the early trade.

Asian markets check
 
Shares in Asia mostly gained on Thursday following an overnight surge in stocks on Wall Street, with all three major indexes stateside posting gains of more than 4.9 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged 3.53 per cent in early trade while the Topix jumped 3.76 per cent as the two indexes climbed for the second-straight day after their Christmas Day tumble.
 
In Australia, the ASX 200 rose around 1.45 per cent in morning trade, with most sectors seeing gains.

Wall Street check
 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 1,000 points for the first time on Wednesday, leading a broad Wall Street rebound after a report that holiday sales were the strongest in years helped mollify concerns about the health of the economy.
 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,086.25 points, or 4.98 per cent, to 22,878.45, the S&P 500 gained 116.6 points, or 4.96 per cent, to 2,467.7, and the Nasdaq Composite added 361.44 points, or 5.84 per cent, to 6,554.36.
