After a subdued start on global cues, the Sensex touched a high of 17,124. The index slipped to a low of 17,061. The Sensex has now recovered and is down 11 points at 17,092.
The Nifty is down five points at 5,117.
The US markets ended on a flat note. The Dow closed at 10552, weaker by 13 points or 0.1%, Nasdaq ended at 2332, higher by five points or 0.2% and S&P shut virtually unchanged at 1138.
Asian markets have also had a weak opening. The Hang Seng and the Nikkei are both trading in red.
The auto index has slipped 0.8% to 7,626. The metal, PSU and realty indices are also in red.
Tata Motors has shed 3.8% at Rs 767. Hero Honda is down 1% at Rs 1,895.
Realty stocks -Jaiprakash Associates and DLF have dropped 1% each to Rs 146 and Rs 314, respectively.
On the other hand, Wipro and TCS are up around 1% each at Rs 705 and Rs 767, respectively.
