Markets subdued

The markets have been choppy since a positive start this morning. After a brief positive spell, the bourses slipped into the red. They are trading flat now. The Sensex is at 18,141, up 3 points, while the Nifty is off 3 points at 5,436.

Sensex gainers are led by I-T behemoth Wipro is up 2% at Rs 448, followed by Hero Honda at Rs 1,831 and Hindalco Industries at Rs 197 both up nearly 2%.

Tata Motors is the top Sensex loser at Rs 1,155 down 3%, while Reliance Infra at Rs 572 and SBI at Rs 2,370 are off 2% each.

In the broader markets, the Mid-cap index is off 0.4% at 6,779, while the Small-cap index shows a marginal decline of 0.2% at 8,240.

The IT counter is leading in the sectoral indices chart up 1% at 6,053. The Capital Goods index at 12,641 is also up 1%, followed by the FMCG counter at 3,800 up 0.4%.

The Oil & Gas counter has declined by 1.3% to 9,238, with ex-CMD of ONGC RS Sharma saying the cash subsidy, announced by the government for downstream companies, is less than expected. PSU stocks are under pressure, with the index at 8,450 down 1%.

Of the 2,481 stocks traded on the BSE so far, 1,001 have advanced, while 1,357 have declined, making the market breadth negative.
