Markets turn soft

The Sensex is quoting at 15972, weaker by 69 points, and the Nifty is at 4772, down 20 points.

The markets have opened positive, mirroring the strength seen in the global indices. The Sensex is quoting at 16089, stronger by 47 points and the Nifty is at 4805, up 12 points. The mid-cap and small-cap space is also in the green. Metals and consumer durables sectors are going strong in this morning's trades.

The US markets ended firm, with the Dow Jones closing stronger by 150 points and Nasdaq ending higher by 24 points. And the Asian markets followed suit, with the Hang Seng adding 48 points and the Nikkei gaining 102 points in early trades.

 

The leading gainers on the Sensex are Hindalco (strengthened by Rs 2 or 1.4% at Rs 136), Jaiprakash Associates (hardened by Rs 1 or 1.2% at RS 129) and Tata Steel (up Rs 5 or 1% at Rs 538). Sterlite, Tata Motors and Wipro are the other major gainers.

The top Sensex losers are Bharti Airtel (weakened by Rs 3 or 1.1% at Rs 310), Sun Pharma (lost Rs 17 or 1% at Rs 1525) and ITC (shed Rs 1 or 0.7% at Rs 242).

The market breadth is positive. Out of 1158 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 971 advancing stocks as against 171 declines.
