After a gap of over a month, Indian sugar mills have again started looking at raw sugar imports in the wake of rising domestic prices.
Two north India sugar mills have taken the lead and placed orders for import of around 90,000 tonnes raw sugar at $370-380 a tonne, a trade official said. He said Dhampur Sugar Mills has placed order for import of around 45,000 tonnes raw sugar, while Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar and Industries has bought around 41,000 tonnes.
The official said a south India firm has also placed an order for raw sugar imports but the exact quantum was not known. He said with the latest import deal, India’s total raw sugar import has touched 2.2 million tonnes, of which about 1.4-1.6 million tonnes has already landed in the country.
