Mixed week for Smart Portfolios

The high volatility in the markets over the last few days has taken a toll on Smart Portfolios. Whereas Shishir Bajpai and Ajay Parmar logged gains, others, including the benchmark, registered net losses in the last five trading days. It was a mixed week overall. The S&P CNX 500 index benchmark portfolio value was down one per cent to Rs 11.10 lakh from Rs 11.21 lakh a week earlier. However, when compared to the start of the Smart Portfolios season on September 1, the net gains remained significant, around 11 per cent.

Fund managers Ajay Parmar and Shishir Bajpai logged gains of 5.4 per cent and 3.5 per cent, respectively. Their overall returns stood at 9.2 per cent and 37.5 per cent, respectively. Vinay Khattar saw a deep cut of 5.5 per cent in his portfolio value, and his net worth slipped below the Rs 10-lakh mark to Rs 9.85 lakh. Siddarth Bhamre, despite a net loss of almost two per cent this week, is sitting on an overall gain of over 10.6 per cent.

Ajay Parmar has been on the sidelines off late. He has 22 stocks in his portfolio, of which just seven are trading below the cost price. Chambal Fertilisers, eClerx, LIC Housing Finance, GEI Industrial, Greaves Cotton, Unichem Laboratories and Aurobindo Pharma are the top gainers – up over 10 per cent each. Shriram EPC, Jubilant Foodworks and Rallis India are the prominent losers – down four-nine per cent each.

Shishir Bajpai,

Shishir Bajpai was fairly active this week with 23 trades, most of them on the buy side. His gross purchases amounted to Rs 10.27 lakh, while gross sales totaled Rs 8.89 lakh. Prominent buys were IFCI, Tata Steel, Orchid Chemicals, Central Bank of India and Punj Lloyd. Prominent sell trades included Canara Bank, Nagarjuna Fertilisers, Indiabulls Real Estate and ONGC. Bajpai holds 15 stocks in his portfolio. His net worth stands at Rs 13.76 lakh and he holds Rs 13,000 in cash.

Siddarth Bhamre,
head - equity derivatives, Angel Broking

Siddarth Bhamre, too remained on the sidelines this week. His net worth stands at Rs 10.60 lakh, including Rs 17,700 cash. Bhamre holds 19 stocks, of which nine are trading below the acquisition price. United Phosphorous and Indiabulls Securities were the major gainers, up 14 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively. The major losers were Electrosteel Castings and JK Tyre.

Vinay Khattar was the other active fund manager this week. He executed 31 trades, of which just 11 were on the buy side. Prominent buys included Chambal Fertilisers, RComm and Polyplex Corporation. He sold Hindustan Construction, Mirc Electronics, Lupin, Punj Lloyd and Suzlon. Khattar holds just 11 stocks. Delta Corp, with a gain of almost 38 per cent, was the top performer. DPSC, Polyplex Corporation and Arrow Textiles were the major losers.
