MKT 'MAY'HEM: BOUNCE SEEN, BUT...

The index has now shed almost 17% (2,130 points) in just eight trading sessions from its all-time closing high of 12,612 on May 10.

The BSE Consumer Durables index slumped 10% to 2,830. The Metal index shed 7% to 8,089, and the Oil & Gas index plunged nearly 6% to 5,074.

While the Mid-cap index declined 6.4% to 4,955, the Small-cap index slipped nearly 7% to 6,336.

Losers outpaced gainers in the ratio of 9:1, i.e, there were nine declining stocks for every advancing stock. Out of a total of 2,374 stocks traded, 2,109 declined, 236 advanced and 29 were unchanged today.

While 792 stocks hit their respective lower circuits, 56 hit their upper limits today.

INDEX SHAKERS.... & MOVERS

The Sensex finally had four gainers today - after a two-day run without any gainers.

Cipla surged nearly 2% to Rs 225. Satyam spurted over 1% to Rs 673. Reliance Energy and Ranbaxy were the other gainers today.

Wipro and Tata Motors plunged over 10% each to Rs 440 and Rs 762, respectively.

Grasim slumped 8.7% to Rs 1,757. Larsen & Toubro and Bharti were down around 7% each at Rs 2,329 and Rs 361, respectively.

Tata Steel, TCS and ONGC were down around 6% each at Rs 473, Rs 1,785 and Rs 1,216, respectively.

Infosys (Rs 2,827), Dr.Reddy's (Rs 1,441), ITC (Rs 172), Hindalco (Rs 180) and NTPC (Rs 112) declined around 5% each.

Reliance dropped 4.6% (Rs 45) to Rs 932.

OTHER LOSERS... & GAINERS

Hindustan Zinc slumped almost 20% to Rs 633. Everest Industries, Apls Industries, J K Industries and Surya Pharma hit the 20% lower limits.

Bata India plunged 19.5% to Rs 214. Escorts, Punj Lloyd, Century Textiles, Corporation Bank, HMT, Ispat Industries, Federal Bank, Jet, VisualSoft, Raymond, Torrent Pharma, Alstom Projects, Reliance Capital, Jindal Stainless, IndusInd Bank and Polaris were the other significant losers today.

Thirumalai Sugar zoomed 9.5% to Rs 145. Maharashtra Seamless, Nestle, Marico, Geodinfo System, BL Kashyap, Jindal Saw Pipes, Super Spinning, CCL Products, Cyber Media, Colour Chem and PSL were the other prominent gainers.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 447.65 crore followed by Tata Steel (Rs 98.04 crore), Satyam (Rs 87.27 crore), Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 83.58 crore) and Reliance Petro (Rs 83.58 crore).

Reliance Petro led the volume chart with trades of around 1.18 crore shares followed by IFCI (1.03 crore), SAIL (60.15 lakh), Reliance (47.76 lakh) and Essar Oil (47.41 lakh).
