Enron Development Corporation, the US-based energy major, is now planning to enter the wind energy sector in the country.

The Indian arm, Enron India, has entered into an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to set up wind-based energy projects in the state.

Enron India has identified three sites in the state where wind velocities will make production of power economical. The wind turbines are capable of generating between one megawatt (mw) to 25 mw of power each.

The company is also exploring similar possibilities in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, it may be mentioned, the company had looked at the possibility of setting up a wind turbine in Rajasthan.

Enron through one of its subsidiaries has developed very efficient wind turbines which are capable of producing power at costs comparable with the most efficient thermal units, Sanjay Bhatnagar, chief executive officer of Enron India said.

"Enron believes in producing power from environment friendly sources worldwide, and we are committed to harness wind and solar energy for power generation," he said.

Worldwide Enron has a strong presence in setting up wind farms and has a presence in this business in several countries. It has installed more than 3,200 wind turbines which produce 600 mw power worldwide.

Enron's wind turbines, both on and offshore, are among the world's most advanced providing clean power generation at competitive costs.

Enron's California-based wind turbine manufacturing subsidiary designs and manufactures the largest wind turbines in the US. These turbines are being used in constructing the world's three largest wind contracts, namely 107 mw and 100 mw projects in Minnesota and a 113 mw project in Iowa.

Enron, through a joint venture, is also the world's second largest solar energy provider. The partnership which has product sales in more than 70 countries is expanding its photovoltaic manufacturing capabilities to meet demand with particular focus on competitively priced remote and rooftop applications.
