The variety will mainly help farmers grow export-quality groundnuts. Junaghad-based agri varsity expects commercial release of the variety to take place next year.
The Agriculture Research Centre of JAU has already completed all the research and is ready with the variety. However, the variety will need a clearance from the Agriculture Research Council. The council is expected to take up the new variety for clearance in early May this year.
"Once the new HPS Groundnut variety gets approval from the council, the centre will be able to release it. The new variety is likely to be released to next year," sources said. The variety has been developed to augment the export of HPS groundnut from Gujarat.
"The new variety is export-oriented and will help farmers grow bigger sized groundnuts of export quality," sources added. HPS groundnut grown in Saurashtra is famous all over the world for its crunchy taste and size.
