A new process for production of chemical free refined sugar without using conventional sugar refining techniques has been developed. The process involves purifying the sugarcane juice using appropriate membrane filters.
The project was sponsored by the Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of the department of science and technology under its sugar technology mission, as part of the government's aim to upgrade the existing technology in the sugar industry to international standards. The four-year long project was implemented by the Tata Energy Research Institute (Teri), New Delhi at the Simbhaoli Sugar Mills Ltd, Uttar Pradesh.
