Nifty hits 5,000 mark

The Nifty has touched the 5,000 level after 16 months. The index opened at 4,959 and have surged to a high of 5,003. The index is now off the day's high at 4,993 - up 34 points.

The Sensex is up 111 points at 16,791.

ACC has gained 3.2% at Rs 825. Reliance Communications and Tata Power added 2.5% each to Rs 361 and Rs 1,336, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates, SBI, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have advanced 1-2% each.

Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Grasim and ONGC are up 1% each.

However, Reliance continues to languish and is now down 2.3% at Rs 2,133.

In Nifty, HCL Technologies has surged 5.4% to Rs 338. Tata Power, Siemens, Ranbaxy and Idea Cellular have also added around 2% each.

 

The market breadth is positive. Out of 2,435 shares traded 1,416 have advanced while 923 have declined.
