The Nifty has been hovering around the 5300 mark in the late noon-session. After trading in a zone of uncertainty through most of the afternoon session, a bout of selling has once again dragged the Nifty close to the 5300 mark. The Sensex is now quoting at 17691, lower by 52 points and the Nifty is at 5306, down 14 points. The mid-cap and smallcap indices are also flat at 7148 and 9240 respectively.
Maruti and ICICI Bank have extended their losses post the Q4 results. The auto major is down 3.6% at Rs 1286, while the largest private sector bank has lost 1.2% at Rs 948. Jaiprakash Associates has weakened by 3.1% at Rs 154. Sterlite is seeing profit booking after the stellar gains seen on the previous days. The leading copper player has lost 1.6% at Rs 828. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries has recovered considerable ground from its day's lows of Rs 1020, but is still trading down 0.9% at Rs 1060.
On the other hand, ONGC has appreciated by 2.6% at Rs 1043 on the government's plans to hike its gas price to $4/mmBtu, Reliance Infra has gained 2.1% at Rs 1139 and M&M has added 1.9% at Rs 538.
The BSE market breadth has turned negative. Out of 2963 stocks traded, 1,345 have advanced while 1530 have declined.
