National Stock Exchange’s (NSE’s) capital market segment turned 21 today. Trading in the equities segment (Capital Market segment) on the NSE began on November 3, 1994 and became the largest exchange in India in terms of volumes transacted within a year. Wholesale Debt Market (WDM) segment operations began in June 1994.

Interestingly, 3 November, 1995 is also the base-year for the CNX Nifty index – the day which also marked the completion of one year of operations of NSE’s equity market segment. The base value of the index has been set at 1,000.

As on August 31, 2015, there are six international ETFs and 11 domestic ETFs and 14 index funds based on the Nifty 50 index, reports suggest. Further, 18 domestic ETFs and index funds are linked to other IISL indices. Nifty 50 options traded on NSE are the largest traded contract globally in equity index options category. In addition to the NSE, Nifty derivatives are also traded on Singapore Exchange, Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Osaka Exchange.
