Onion prices fall 31% in Nashik

The average wholesale prices of onion in various markets across Nashik district, a major hub in the country, declined by around Rs 180 a quintal on Monday on high arrivals.
 
On Monday, onion was sold at Rs 5-6 a kg in Nashik's retail market. It fell between 21.29 per cent and 31.03 per cent in various Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) across Nashik district on Monday as compared with the prices in the month-ago period.
 
On Monday, the average wholesale prices in Lasalgaon APMC were Rs 400 a quintal (Rs 580 a quintal on March 23), Rs 415 a quintal (Rs 551) in Pimpalgaon, Rs 385 a quintal (Rs. 525) in Yeola and Rs 425 a quintal (Rs 540) in Nashik APMC.
 
The Nashik district is the major onion market in the country. The district produces about 12 lakh tonnes of onion annually (including all the three crops, Kharip, Rangada and Rabi).
 
Maharashtra accounts for around 30 per cent of the country's total onion production. The Nashik district contributes 35 to 40 per cent of the state's production.
 
On Monday, 19,770 quintals of onions were sold at Lasalgaon APMC, 21,840 quintals at Pimpalgaon, 7,950 quintals at Yeola APMC and 1,099 quintals of onions at Nashik APMC.
