The cold storages in Uttar Pradesh have reported a jump of nearly 8 lakh tonnes in the arrival of potato for refrigerated storage facility.
This year, a total of 98 lakh tonnes of potato have arrived at private cold storages in UP.
State horticulture and food processing secretary Manoj Kumar Singh today directed the department officials to ensure speedier delivery of potato from cold storages to local mandis in order to keep wholesale and retail prices steady and ensure better prices for farmers. In August, potato from Hassan region would start arriving in the state market, which could depress the local potato prices. The current wholesale prices of potato are about Rs 550/quintal in the state mandis.
If adequate quantity of potato is not released from cold storages at regular intervals, there are high possibilities of the entire stock not getting exhausted in the annual storage season (December-November).
