India Nippon Electricals Ltd has tied up with its Japanese joint venture partner Kokusan Denki Company, to manufacture digital ignition, which is to be launched soon.

Initial investment in the project will be Rs 4 crore, which will be largely met through internal accruals.

The digital ignition forms part of the new engine management system that will be fitted into the four-stroke, 150-cc motorcycle that TVS Suzuki plans to launch sometime next year.

T K Balaji, chairman of India Nippon, said the digital technology is a new branch that the two-wheeler industry is moving toward the world over.

While it is difficult to quantify the market for the product, it is only a matter of time for two-wheeler manufacturers start using the product, he says.

When electronic starters were first introduced 10 years back, it was considered a new technology but has almost totally replaced kick-start mechanical methods and is accepted as a standard feature.

With stringent emission norms coming into place and the market for two-wheelers with a higher engine capacity grows, digital ignition systems will gain acceptance, the company hopes.

Although they can technically be fitted with engines of even smaller size, the system tends to get used along with larger engines given that the engine management systems inclined to be more expensive.

The digital system, by controlling ignition timing, improves engine efficiency by reducing fuel wastage.

India Nippon Electricals is promoted by Lucas Indian Service, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lucas TVS, and Kokusan Denki Company, with both the companies holding 39.8 per cent and 18.9 per cent stake, respectively, in the company. Another TVS group company Harita Ltd holds 1.9 per cent stake in India Nippon. name="description" content="Siyaram's Silk Mills Ltd has drawn up plans to multiply its turnover from the present Rs 300 crore by opening exclusive showrooms and positive advertising.">
