After a year-long debate over the issue of 135 per cent rise in freight charges on salt transportation by rail and representations from the salt industry, Indian Railways has decided to reduce the freight rate on the commodity. Rebates ranging from 10 per cent to 25 percent would be granted depending on volume of salt being transported through wagons.
In the last 13 months, the salt industry in Gujarat passed through a very difficult phase. Though production was not disrupted, salt delivery across the country was hit by the high railway freight.
