The rupee appreciated by 6 paise to Rs 49.15 per dollar in the opening trade today on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on increased foreign capital inflows.

Dealers said higher opening in local equities and gains in other Asian currencies overseas against the US dollar, supported the rupee.

Yesterday, the rupee had lost 20 paise to close at 49.21/22 against the dollar on fresh demand for the US currency from importers and fall in equity markets.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex recovered 77.42 points, or 0.44%, to 17,661.39 in early trade today.
