The Indian rupee held steady at Rs 44.44/45 per US dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange here today, in the absence of market-moving factors.

The rupee hovered in a restricted range between Rs 44.44 and Ea 44.48 per dollar in morning trade before quoting at Rs 44.44/45 per dollar at 1030 hours, as against the overnight closing level of Rs 44.45/46 per dollar.

Banks and corporates preferred to maintain their holdings of the American currency at current levels in view of uncertainty over the dollar in the overseas market, a forex dealer said.

However, in the Tokyo market, the dollar fell against the euro in early trade after a report that Germany and France had reached a deal over a Greek aid plan ahead of a key Eurozone summit in Brussels to address the region's sovereign debt crisis.
