See-saw markets end flat

The Sensex today opened on a subdued note at 15,351, down 27 points, owing to weak results reported by the Reliance Industries on Friday. The index, however, rebouded into the positive zone and touched a high of 15,463 backed by fresh buying in realty and FMCG stocks.

However, a fresh round of selling in the second half of the day saw the index slip back into the negative terrain to a low of 15,228 - down 235 points from the day's high. The markets languished in the red for quite some time however recovered towards the end to end flat at 15,375, down four points.

The NSE Nifty moved in a range of 68 points, a high of 4,597 and a low of 4,529. The index finally ended the day at 4,572 - up three points.

The BSE FMCG index rallied 3.6% to 2,674. It was followed by Realty (3%), Power (2.3%) and Metal (2%) indices. The Oil & Gas index shed 3% to 9,299.

 

The market breadth was postive - out of 2,727 stocks traded, 1,680 advanced and 956 declined today.

SENSEX MOVERS...

Hindustan Unilever zoomed nearly 6% to Rs 299. ITC surged 2.6% to Rs 239.

Tata Power rallied 5.5% to Rs 1,237. DLF gained 4.7% at Rs 412, and Tata Steel added 4% to Rs 457.

BHEL moved up 2.6% to Rs 2,261. Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel and Grasim were up around 2% each.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Reliance shed 3.7% at Rs 1,939 following a near 12% fall in net profit.

Hero Honda and ONGC dropped around 3% each to Rs 1,683 and Rs 1,095, respectively.

HDFC slipped 2% to Rs 2,366. Mahindra & Mahindra declined 1.8% to Rs 816.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance topped the combined value chart with a turnover of Rs 1,491.07 crore on the BSE and the NSE. It was followed by DLF (Rs 1,151.39 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 1,045.93 crore), Jaiprakash Associates (Rs 860.22 crore) and Suzlon (Rs 821.07 crore).

Suzlong led the combined volume chart with trades of around 77.71 million shares followed by IFCI (68.89 million, Unitech (64.57 million), Ispat Industries (60.89 million) and Satyam (56.23 lakh).
