Select spices spurt on heavy demand, thin supply

Copra edible, copra Alapuzha and copra Kozhikode prices rose sharply at the spices market here today due to brisk buying from stockists and bulk traders amidst limited arrivals from key producing regions.

Black pepper also firmed up on good domestic as well as export demand.

Copra edible Mumbai, copra office Alapuzha and copra office Kozhikode, all hardened by Rs 100 per kilo each to Rs 6,250, Rs 5,500 and Rs 5,400 from last weekend's closing level of Rs 6,150, Rs 5,400 and Rs 5,300 respectively.

Black pepper gained by Rs 10 per kilo to Rs 221/241, as compared with Rs 211/231 last Saturday.

Meanwhile, rest of the spices closed stable in the absence of necessary buying support.

Following are today's closing rates in rupees, with the previous rates in brackets:

Black pepper (per kilo) 221/241 (211/231), ginger bleached (per kilo) 230 (230), ginger unbleached (per kilo) 245 (245), copra office Alapuzha (per quintal) 5,500 (5,400), copra office Kozhikode (per quintal) 5,400 (5,300), copra Rajapur Mumbai (per quintal) 6,900 (6,900) and copra edible Mumbai (per quintal) 6,250 (6,150)
