Gains in newly constituted Sensex scrips and old-economy counters saw the Sensex break the 5,000 mark barrier at the start of the week.
However, on Wednesday the markets witnessed selling pressure, especially in bluechip counters. More selling was witnessed on Thursday following rumours that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was planning to impose additional margins on brokers holding huge positions in the derivatives segment, thus dragging the Sensex below the 5,000 mark.

The trend continued on the last session of the week as selling in blue-chip counters and unwinding of positions in the derivatives segment added to further losses in the indices.

Hero Honda surged to a 52-week high on Wednesday, propped by buoyant October sales figures. The scrip gained 4.5 per cent over its previous weekly close.
The auto major sold 2,80,825 motorcycles in October, a lakh units more than the 1.8 lakhs sold in October, 2002. The October sales have surged enough to leave almost all Hero Honda dealers stocked out.
New models introduced by the company during the current fiscal, such as CD-Dawn, Passion Plus and Splendor+, were the main growth drivers, leading to the robust sales performance. Hero Honda has speeded ahead of Bajaj Auto in the entry level segment, riding its new CD Dawn bike.
The bike has achieved leadership position in the segment within six months of its launch. The company's leadership position in the executive segment was strengthened with the launch of Passion Plus and Splendor+ in September/October 2003.
