Sensex down 283pts; Wipro, Infosys shed 4%

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 144 points at 16,227. The index is now down 283 points at 16,088.

The NSE Nifty is down 70 points at 4,872.

Wipro and Infosys have plunged 4% each to Rs 435 and Rs 1,466, respectively. ICICI Bank has tumbled 3.4% to Rs 807.

Reliance Energy, HDFC Bank and Jaiprakash Associates have dropped 2.5% each to Rs 1,299, Rs 1,366 and Rs 234, respectively.

SBI has slipped over 2% to Rs 1,645. Reliance has declined 1.8% to Rs 2,305.

Cipla, however, has gained 2.3% at Rs 223.
