The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 272 points at 9,098, and soon tumbled to a low of 8,952. The index is now down 351 points at 9,019.
Sterlite and Jaiprakash Associates have plunged nearly 8% each to Rs 252 and Rs 65, respectively. Wipro has slumped 6.5% to Rs 228.
Tata Steel and Reliance Communications have tumbled over 6% each to Rs 200 and Rs 174, respectively.
DLF has dropped 5.8% to Rs 200. ICICI Bank and Reliance Infrastructure have shed 5.5% each at Rs 417 and Rs 494, respectively.
Reliance and TCS have slipped over 5% each to Rs 1,117 and Rs 512, respectively.
Infosys, Hindalco and SBI are down over 4.5% each at Rs 1,243, Rs 48 and Rs 1,145, respectively.
All index stocks are in negative zone with losses in excess of 1% each.
