The Sensex dipped below the 9,000-mark to a low of 8,941, and is now down 700 points at 9,071.
Hindalco has crashed 18.5% to Rs 43. Mahindra & Mahindra has tumbled 14% to Rs 295.
Tata Motors and Tata Steel have plunged 12% each to Rs 172 and Rs 184, respectively. Sterlite has slumped 11% to Rs 218.
Ranbaxy, Reliance Infrastructure and ONGC have shed around 10% each at Rs 207, Rs 404 and Rs 700, respectively.
ITC and DLF have dropped around 9% each to Rs 153 and Rs 245, respectively.
SBI, Reliance Communications and Tata Power have slipped around 8.5% each to Rs 1,210, Rs 211 and Rs 667, respectively.
HDFC, Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank are down around 7.5% each at Rs 1,625, Rs 570 and Rs 993, respectively.
The market breadth is extremely negative - out of 2,388 stocks traded so far, 2,008 have declined, 325 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.
