The Sensex opened 112 points higher at 8,851, touched a high of 8,855, but soon pared gains and slipped into the negative zone. The index slipped to a low of 8,651, and is now down 77 points at 8,662.
Tata Steel has soared 7% to Rs 159. Tata Motors has advanced over 2% to Rs 131.
Jaiprakash Associates and Sterlite have moved up 1.5% each to Rs 59 and Rs 234, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra has plunged 4.7% to Rs 238. Wipro and Bharti Airtel have shed 2.5% each at Rs 227 and Rs 655, respectively.
Infosys, TCS, Maruti and HDFC Bank have slipped nearly 2% each to Rs 1,187, Rs 525, Rs 452 and Rs 869, respectively.
ITC and DLF have dropped 1.5% each to Rs 167 and Rs 179, respectively.
