Sensex down 92pts; Satyam slumps 4%

Sebi denied any action against brokers/foreign institutional investors today. Panic selling, triggered by rumours that the regulator had suspended seven foreign institutions from dealing in securities, led to the Sensex swinging close to 400 points this afternoon.

The Sensex is now down 92 points at 11,655.

ACC has rallied 7.3% to Rs 899. Grasim has surged 2.8% to Rs 2,230, and Gujarat Ambuja is up 1% at Rs 108.

Infosys has gained 2.4% to Rs 3,188. Hindalco has moved up 1.7% to Rs 190. Tata Power, Tata Steel and BHEL are the other notable gainers.

Satyam has slumped 4.3% to Rs 821. While HDFC Bank has shed 3.8% to Rs 809, ICICI Bank has dropped 2.8% to Rs 604.

Ranbaxy has plunged over 3% to Rs 459. Hero Honda and Maruti are down nearly 3% each at Rs 873 and Rs 892, respectively.

Wipro, Tata Motors and HDFC have declined 2.5% each to Rs 544, Rs 940 and Rs 1,320, respectively.

Infosys tops the value chart with a turnover of Rs 248.78 crore followed by ACC (Rs 168.15 crore), Satyam (Rs 151.64 crore), Reliance (Rs 124.15 crore) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs 90.36 crore).

Adhunik Metal leads the volume chart with trades of around 1.10 crore shares followed by Sterling Biotech (74.76 lakh), Himachal (71.55 lakh), G V Films (52.30 lakh) and Reliance Energy Ventures (51.40 lakh).
