The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 92 points at 9665. Sustained selling in the market saw the index tumble to a low of 9201 - down 556 ponits from its previous close. The index finally ended with a loss of 4.7% (461 points) at 9296. The index is now in the negative territory on a year-till-date basis and has shed a whopping 11% (1,155 points) in the last four trading sessions. The market breadth was extremely negative with 91.6% of the traded stocks ending lower. Out of a total of 2,408 stocks traded, 2,205 declined, 171 advanced and 32 were unchanged. INDEX SHAKERS.... Bajaj Auto slumped 8.5% to Rs 2,320. Tata Power and Tata Steel plunged 7.6% each to Rs 427 and Rs 426, respectively. Reliance dropped 7.5% (Rs 66) to Rs 825. HLL and Bharti Airtel slipped over 7% each to Rs 204 and Rs 329, respectively. Dr.Reddy's tumbled nearly 7% to Rs 1,181. Reliance Energy and Ranbaxy shed 6.5% each to Rs 377 and Rs 342, respectively. Cipla, Wipro and ICICI Bank declined 6% each to Rs 199, Rs 418 and Rs 500, respectively. Larsen & Toubro, BHEL, SBI and HDFC were down 6% each at Rs 1,882, Rs 1,733, Rs 767 and Rs 1,108, respectively. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS Reliance led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 378 crore followed by Larsen & Toubro (Rs 118.85 crore), Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 114 crore), Infosys (Rs 108.69 crore) and Hindustan Zinc (Rs 106.62 crore). Reliance Petro topped the volume chart with trades of around 59.31 lakh shares followed by SAIL (58.47 lakh), Reliance Communication Ventures (57.28 lakh), Hindalco (49 lakh) and ITC (47.40 lakh). |
