Sensex ends above 11K, ICICI Bk zooms 5%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 27 points at 10,840, and did not bother to look back today. After rallying over 100 points in early deals, the index displayed a range-bound movement through the morning session.

Fresh buying in late noon deals saw the index cross the 11,000-mark and touch a high of 11,028. The index finally settled with a gain of 202 points (up nearly 2%) at 11,015.

The Sensex thus ended above the 11,000-mark after almost 12 weeks - the last time the index closed above this mark was on 18 May.

The BSE Bankex rallied over 3% to 5015. The FMCG and Oil & Gas indices gained around 2% each at 1892 and 5050, respectively.

While the Mid-cap index spurted 1.2% to 4410, the Small-cap index moved up 1.6% to 5299.

Advances beat declines 2:1, i.e there were two advancing shares for every declining stock. Out of 2,513 stocks traded, 1,612 advanced, 819 declined and 82 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

ICICI Bank surged nearly 5% to Rs 595. Larsen & Toubro and Bharti Airtel rallied around 3.5% each to Rs 2,286 and Rs 405, respectively.

Reliance Communications and Bajaj Auto advanced around 3% each to Rs 278 and Rs 2,658, respectively. SBI added 2.5% to Rs 831.

ONGC, Reliance, ITC, Maruti, TCS and Tata Motors were up over 2% each at Rs 1,189, Rs 977, Rs 172, Rs 787, Rs 955 and Rs 766, respectively.

Wipro, HLL, ACC, Hindalco, Tata Steel, HDFC, HDFC Bank and Dr.Reddy's also finished with gains of over 1% each.

BHEL slipped nearly 1% to Rs 2,166. Ranbaxy and Hero Honda were the other losers among the index stocks today.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

ICICI Bank topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 151 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 123 crore), SBI (Rs 76.82 crore), BHEL (Rs 62.33 crore) and Bajaj Hindustan (Rs 49.68 crore).

Balrampur Chini led the volume chart with trades of around 29.90 lakh shares followed by Mascon Global (29 lakh), IFCI (26.85 lakh), G V Films (26.50 lakh) and SAIL (26.20 lakh).
